Pathways to success: From Navy Veteran to IT Professional.

Leaving the Australian Defence Force, Annaleise was looking ahead and considering her future career pathway. She contacted Soldier On’s Pathways team for advice during her jobsearch.

Annaleise joined the Royal Australian Navy in 2013, with aspirations to see the world. Working onboard warships as a Communications and Information Systems Sailor she developed high-level skills in managing and operating complex communication systems.

After 6 years of service Annaleise decided it was time for a career change. “Leaving Defence can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve been in for a long time. You can really lose your confidence, even a telephone job interview seems really hard,” explains Annaleise.

Navigating the unchartered waters of civilian life after leaving the familiarity of the Defence Force can be challenging. That’s where The Soldier On Pathways team helps out. Providing Veterans and their family members with employment and education support, as part of Soldier On’s holistic support services, which enables them to secure their future careers.

Annaleise was supported by one of Soldier On’s Pathways Officers, John, who helped her to update her resume, assisted her with job interview practice, introduced her to potential employers and gave her moral support. This enabled Annaleise to translate her military skills for the civilian workforce.

What Annaleise hadn’t realised, was that throughout her ADF career she had been building up a strong professional skillset, setting the foundations for success in her future civilian career.

“The Pathways Program actively forwarded my resume on to people and were very pro-active about finding me a job. John sent my resume to Think Technology Australia and that morning I got a call. I had an interview a few days later and by Friday I’d got the job offer!”

Australia’s Defence Force Veterans have an incredible wealth of skills, including strong leadership skills, teamwork and valuable experience. This is something that Soldier On and veteran-supportive organisations like Think Technology Australia, recognise and embrace.

Mungo Bright, Business Manager of dynamic IT solutions company, Think Technology Australia, knows first-hand about the valuable skills Veterans acquire, having served as an Infantry Soldier in the Australian Defence Force for over 4 years.

“The strength of Think Technology Australia relies on the strength of our people. We provide a positive, supportive environment for our team to succeed. We try to employ ex-Defence members when we can. We recognise the high-level skills acquired in the Defence Force, which includes a strong work ethic, ability to work well in a team and always being on time.”

Think Technology Australia is one of over 170 companies currently working in collaboration with Soldier On to enable more Veterans and their family members to secure meaningful long-term employment after transitioning out of the Australian Defence Force. The innovative IT company is a prime example of a professional veteran employer striving to ensure successful veteran transitions into the civilian workforce.

Think Technology Australia has an extensive Wellness Program available to all employees. The program includes a weekly session with an in-house counsellor and team coach, to help combat stress. The organisation also encourages employees to undertake further education and training, and to give back to the community when they can, for example through blood donations.

Many of Think Technology Australia’s core values align with those in Defence including professionalism and the spirit of mateship, as Mungo Bright explains: “What I like most about working with Soldier On is being able to give something back, help mates out and to be in touch with highly skilled potential employees that might suit the roles we are recruiting for.”

Annaleise is a highly valued member of the team at Think Technology Australia, where she’s thriving in a dynamic IT specialist role; “I’ve been at Think Technology Australia for 9 months. It’s a very cohesive workplace, the best thing about working here is that they really listen to you and value your ideas.”

Business Manager, Mungo Bright truly values what Annaleise brings to the organisation; “Annaleise is a fantastic member of our team, she is very personable and great with our clients, she genuinely cares, which makes her stand out and she has a very strong work ethic. Give her a job and she gets it done well and on time.”

Annaleise counts herself lucky to have heard about Soldier On through a friend. “It was amazing to have that advice and support. It’s quite overwhelming leaving Defence, but there are people out there willing to help you, you’re not on your own. Just reach out to Soldier On, make that first step.”
