Tonia Defence Partner

My Pathways story by Tonia

My husband has been in the Army for the last ten years and been posted to five locations and he has done one six month deployment. Although we lived in the same location for half of his service he was probably away for training or courses for at least half of the time.

I found out about Solider on through the Wellbeing Wednesday events which I started attending after being posted to Canberra last year. From this event came many links with the Pathways program and other military support organisations such as DCO and DFA.

I was initially interested in the Pathways program for my husband as he was exploring options for his future. After becoming redundant during COVID. I then reached out to use the services for myself. The Pathways team has supported me in finding education providers for upskilling to meet the market, getting my resume up to scratch and just generally supporting me in the ups and downs of the job search process.

Support of Defence partners is of the upmost importance as often balancing family life and priorities becomes the reason defence members leave defence life. If partners can be more supported with employment through the continual changes and challenges that defence life brings this can offer a real lifeline to family members. Being able to have employment in this situation is so much more than the pay check. It is a way to become a part of a new social network, it is a way to build confidence and resilience in the face of challenge and it is also a way to build a sense of normalcy into everyday life.

The best thing that Solider On has done for me is introduce me to a new network. It is proven that 85% of people get their next job through their network and moving so often really hampers this as a possibility for defence spouses.

I would say if you are interested in doing something new with your education or employment then don’t hesitate to get in touch with Solider On. Everyone is so friendly and will do everything they can to help, support and encourage you to follow your passions and pursue something that is the right fit for you.
